JAY 3 Backrest System from Wicked Wheelchairs

When buying a backrest, most people expect it to work without complication. The shell fits just right, the hardware mounts easily, contouring matches exactly and moving the back on and off the chair is effortless. For many products, this is the ideal not the reality... until the J3 back.

Never before have the creative minds of JAY spent more time studying the subtleties of fitting the back to the user and then the back to the chair. The result: The J3 back. The most comprehensive combination of individual shell sizes, positioning capabilities and adjustable hardware ever assembled.

Jay 3 Carbon Fibre Backrest

Feel the Difference - Lightweight, Strong and Stylish
Designed to provide an ultra lightweight and stylish backrest for active users, the J3 Carbon backrest provides firm stabilisation of the pelvis and lower spine to encourage an optimal spinal curve. This stability is needed for upper body movement to ensure you can maintain an active lifestyle. Apart from being exceptionally comfortable, it can also help to reduce back pain.
Carbon fibre is lightweight and strong - therefore the ideal material for this backrest. Offering the same strength as aluminium (but 60% lighter), the J3 Carbon backrest reduces the weight that a wheelchair users has to push and transfer. Day-by day, you’ll feel the difference!

The four back heights (from 17cm - 38cm) focus on the active user with a need for low to moderate posterior trunk support. Mild lateral trunk support is provided by the 5cm contour depth.

Available with two different mounting systems.  The rigid system offers fixed frame wheelchair users an ultra-lightweight two-point attachment whilst the two-point quick release system is ideal for folding wheelchairs. Both systems are easy- to handle- and offer the same adjustments in angle, depth, height and width to adapt to your individual needs.

Spine Align

Introduction
Fitting the back to the user (not the user to the back) is the goal of the Spine-Align posture conforming system. This is accomplished by combining a wide range of individual foam components to create unique shapes that optimise postural support, evenly distribute pressure and maximise function. The flexibility of the system is boundless.

How does Spine-Align work?
To better understand how the system works, let's take a look at an example of a user with a "C" curve posture. In this case, a J3 back shallow contour (upper thoracic) is attached to the back posts. When the user sits against the back, their support is concentrated in a small area, resulting in instability and discomfort over time.

Using the angular adjustment capabilities of the new J3 hardware, the backrest angle is realigned to better match the shape of the spine. Once the angle is set, it is easy to add a medium triangle which will fit in the top and a large triangle fitting in the bottom. This results in a back that matches and supports the user, maximises pressure distribution to preserve skin integrity whilst improving stability, comfort and sitting tolerance.

How to use Spine-Align
Adjusting the shape of the J3 back is easy. The foam shaping components slip between the shell and the cover without the need to opening the foam cover.
Velcro™ strips attach to each shape so they can be placed into multiple configurations.

Jay Mount Hardware

Introduction

Providing the correct size back for each individual is critical to preventing problems down the road. For this reason, the J3 back offers virtually every combination of depth, height, angle and width that an adult user may require.

Five Objectives for the JAYMount.

When developing the revolutionary JAYMount hardware,
there were 5 key objectives that the JAY team wanted to accomplish:

1. Accommodating a variety of back-cane diameters.

Backrest mounting hardware often does not match back-cane tubing diameter, so the J3 back was designed with just one hinged clamp that can accommodate back-cane tubing from 1.9cm to 2.8cm.
Picture
2. Providing multiple mounting locations without altering backrest position.

Frequently, obstructions such as towel bars and armrest receivers force clinicians, dealers and technicians to make compromises to backrest position.

To maximise compatibility, the J3 back's unique 2 point attachment hardware occupies as little space as possible and mounts without affecting the user's fit. Furthermore, unlike other backs, the J3 back's vertical position can be adjusted after the hardware location is set.

3. Accommodating different hip and shoulder widths with no additional hardware.

In many situations, the back fits the chair but not the user. To address this problem, the team created 5cm of built in width adjustment. For example, a 46cm wide chair can now accommodate a 41cm wide back.

Picture
4. Providing effortless backrest removal and re-attachment.

Difficulty removing and reattaching the backrest is a common complaint voiced by users. To make things easier, the JAYMount system can be attached with minimal amount of force and limited dexterity and also locks back automatically into place when re-attached. This ease of removal empowers users to perform these function independently.

Picture
5.Providing up to 22° backrest angle adjustment without reducing seat depth.

Unfortunately, many backrests lose seat depth when the bottom of the back pivots forward as the top reclines backward. JAYMount hardware was designed to allow the back angle to open with minimal or no loss of seat depth. It maintains a fixed position throughout the angle adjustment cycle.

The J3 back has a standard depth adjustment of 5cm, although if greater depth is required, an optional extended bracket is available.

This is a critical feature for users with postural deformities who may require more extreme angles; JAYMount hardware prevents compromising their position in the chair.
